FRA part of top-secret hacker project
The Swedish National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) is an active participant in the top-secret programme WINTERLIGHT, initiated by the top level of the US intelligence agency NSA. The project is about conducting top-secret hacking of computers. This is revealed in documents leaked by Edward Snowden, which Uppdrag Granskning has uncovered.
FRA has access to controversial surveillance system
The NSA has granted the Swedish FRA access to one of the most controversial systems in its global mass surveillance. Called Xkeyscore, the system makes it possible to monitor millions of people worldwide. This was revealed in new top-secret documents that Uppdrag Granskning has uncovered.

FRA hacking computers – top-secret project with the NSA
Before the Riksdag, the FRA Director-General Ingvar Åkesson denied that the FRA hacked computers in what is called ”active signals intelligence”. But documents from Edward Snowden show that the FRA has done just that in collaboration with the American NSA.

Since 2011, the US is granted access to cable collection performed by Swedish Government SIGINT Agency, the FRA. As recently as in 2004, after 50 years of secret cooperation, an even closer relation was established between the NSA and the FRA, through a bilateral agreement.

According to the documents Swedish FRA, Defence Radio Authority, are spying on the political leadership in Russia and passing this information on to the USA.

“The FRA collaborates with its counterparts in other countries, but to what extent and in what countries is not public information.”, says Swedish Minister for Defence Karin Enström.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt does not think that the disclosure of the FRA’s extensive collaboration with the US signals intelligence organisation will have any effect on Russian–Swedish relations.
